You are most welcome to visit the Museum of Illusions in Brussels and get inspired by a fascinating world of optical illusions. In some situations, we require your personal information about referring to your upcoming visit. For example, if you order a ticket online, request information, subscribe to our newsletter or apply for a job. Of course, we handle your personal data with utmost care. Read on for more information about our privacy policy and how we use your data.

How is my data being used?

We strive to limit processing personal data to an absolute minimum. However, certain personal data will always be required, e.g. for the correct provision of products and services offered by the museum. Additionally, your personal data is handled with the utmost care and secure it to the best of our ability. In principle, this data will not be supplied to third parties, unless this is necessary for the service in question, or if we are legally obliged to do so. Personal data will be stored for the shortest possible length of time and we take legal retention periods that apply to certain data into consideration. You always remain the owner of the data you provided to us. This means you gave us permission for the personal data to be processed and can revoke this permission and request your data is deleted. Apart from cookies that are necessary to run the website, you can configure your settings and choose how you want your personal data to be used in line with the purposes described below. You can configure the settings for each partner separately. We provide here a description of each one of our objectives related to the way both we and our partners use your personal data.

Website Access

The storage of data or access to data already stored on your device, such as digital identification for advertising, device identification, cookies and similar technologies.

Personalization

Collection and processing of data related to your use of this service in order to subsequently deliver to you advertising and/or personalized content in other contexts, such as other websites or applications. In general, the content of the website or the application is used to make conclusions regarding your interests, which is used for subsequent choices about advertising and/or content.

Targeting and advertising strategy

Data is collected and then grouped with previously collected data in order to select and broadcast advertising to you and then evaluate the reach and efficiency of advertising. This includes: the use of previously collected data related to your interest for the selection of advertising; the processing of data on the advertising that was displayed and at which frequency, at what time and where it was displayed; knowledge on whether you reacted to the advertising offered to you, for example whether you clicked on the ad or made a purchase. This does not include Personalization that consists of the collection and processing of data related to your use of this service in order to subsequently deliver to you advertising and/or personalized content in other contexts, such as other websites or applications.

Audience measurement

The collection of data related to your use of the content and grouping of this data with previously collected data in order to evaluate and understand the way you use the service. This does not include Personalization that consists of the collection and processing of data related to your use of this service in order to subsequently deliver to you advertising and/or personalized content in other contexts, such as other websites or applications.

Museum visit

To ensure safety and security of our visitors and personnel, we use CCTV surveillance inside the museum. We handle the recordings with utmost care as well. They are not shared with third parties unless the police or other authorities request them. Recordings are stored for a maximum of 4 weeks, unless this data is required as part of investigations being conducted by the police or other authorities. On certain occasions we make photographs or videos. These images are being used to report and give an impression of these occasions. We will not ask your consent for these images, because these images are made in the context of the freedom of press. In case you don’t want to be photographed, please inform the photographer, so he/she can take this in account. If we take pictures of a minor or a incapacitated person, we will always ask consent of a legal designated representative. We will ask consent for all other images we make inside or outside of the museum. At the museum you can use our free Wi-Fi service and therefore we may receive information that could be used to identify you or the device you are using. For example, your MAC address or unique means of identification, such as a name or number assigned to a device. This data is not stored or shared with third parties.

Handling personal data

Personal data will not be stored for longer than is strictly required in order to realise the purpose for which the data was collected. In some cases, we are bound by a legal retention period. In case your personal data cannot be deleted for technical reasons, your data will be anonymized whenever possible. Job applicants’ data is deleted or destroyed 4 weeks after a recruitment procedure is completed or stopped, unless it has been agreed with the applicant that their data will be kept on file. In the case of the latter, we will store the data for a maximum of 1 additional year. If you have subscribed to receive our email communication (such as newsletters) or have indicated that you would like to be added to our records as a museum relation, we process your data until such time as you indicate that you would no longer like to receive our email communication or would like to be deleted from our records. To unsubscribe from our newsletter, you can also click ‘Unsubscribe’ in the header or footer of our newsletter. All data collected in relation to the provision of our products and/or services will be deleted as soon as possible after the transaction has been completed in full. We store personal data from relations that visit our museum regularly, such as schools, until they ask us to delete these personal data. In case of events we store personal data with a maximum of four weeks after the event. Images made during events are stored in our digital archive and is, for press purposes, stored and used for an indefinite period of time. Personal data is only shared with third parties if this is required to fulfil an agreement or contract entered into with you, to comply with legal obligations or to cooperate with investigations being conducted by the police or other authorities. See also article 6. Your personal data will be processed and stored within the European Union as much as possible. Our processors might store or process your personal data outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). Transfer of personal data to a country outside of the EEA will only take place when that country ensures they take appropriate precautions to protect personal data.

For any question or inquiry about your personal data, please mail (info@museumofillusions.be) or contact us per post (Museum of Illusions Brussels, Rue du Fossé aux Loups / Wolvengracht 18, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium). We will respond to your request as soon as possible, and at latest within 4 weeks. In order to prevent abuse, we might ask you for identification, by sending us a copy of your identification. If you believe that we do not handle your personal data with care or respond to your request seriously, you have the right to file a complaint with the Belgian authority for data protection (Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit). The Museum of Illusions Brussels will always do its utmost to secure your personal data. Our aim is to prevent misuse or loss of data, as well as unauthorised access, unwanted publication or unlawful adjustments. The Museum of Illusions Brussels reserves the right to make changes, additions or adjustments to its privacy statement. This privacy policy is created on 1 June 2022.
