We are thrilled to invite you to experience a mesmerising new addition to the Museum of Illusions in Brussels – an extraordinary interactive kaleidoscope created by renowned Dutch artist Monique Verbruggen (1957).
🎨 Meet the Artist: Monique Verbruggen
For over 35 years, Dutch glass artist Monique Verbruggen has been pushing the boundaries of glass artistry, mastering techniques such as stained glass, fusing, and sandblasting, to create intricate works of art. Inspired by her background in dance and enchanted by childhood memories of mirrors and reflections from her mother's dressing table, Verbruggen's work captures the magic of light and movement.
In 2024, Verbruggen generously donated this extraordinary kaleidoscope to the Museum of Illusions, sharing her passion for interactivity and visual storytelling with a wider audience.
🌈 Step Into the Kaleidoscope
Currently on temporary display, this breathtaking kaleidoscope—crafted from fused glass and aluminum—is one of only six ever created. The piece features three large glass wheels, each beautifully fused with intricate images including figures, trees and delicate shapes. Visitors are invited to turn these wheels, projecting the images inside the kaleidoscope. With every turn, the images shift and move, combining in endless ways—allowing you to create your own unique story or image. No two experiences are the same, making it an immersive, hands-on journey through a world of light, shadow, and color.
As she shared with Glas Magazine: the works really "capture your attention and makes you wonder. The images come to life and tell each viewer something completely different....I often see that visitors are completely absorbed in their experience...this often led to special conversations between visitors who did not know each other at all".
